Maidenhead
Marlins is a competitive swimming club based at the Magnet
Leisure Centre in Maidenhead.
The Marlins compete in inter-club competitions across the
South of England and their members also compete individually
in Open competitions and championships.
Club nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Magnet
Centre.
However depending on age and ability there are a number
of other training sessions throughout the week at
the Magnet Centre, St. Pirans School and Eton College.
The club caters for a broad age group of swimmers with
the youngest club members being 7 years old, right through
to the Masters age groups which start at 25 years plus.
Entry to the club is via the stroke development program (starting
at age 5) which is run in conjunction with the club,
or for more accomplished swimmers, via a competitive assessment.
The club consists of a number of ability graded stroke
development groups and a number of competitive training
squads.
In the lower groups the focus is purely on stroke development
and teaching the fundamental skills required to prepare
the swimmers for competition. As the swimmers progress
through the groups swimming becomes more training
orientated where the focus is on further improving technique,
building up stamina, strength, and speed.
Members of the stroke development groups swim 1 - 2 times a week dependant on ability.
Members of the club development squads swim 2 - 3 times while the members of the
competitive squads are expected to train a minimum of
4 times a week.
All swimmers are expected to represent the club in
competitions when invited.
The Marlins principal poolside staff are all ASA qualified
and comprise:
Head Coach, Jane Cox, who is responsible for the overall
development and direction of the club and the training
squads.
Junior Squad Coach, Jean Ashworth who is responsible for the
development of the 12 years and under swimmers.
Julie McIvor is responsible for co-ordination of the
teaching and stroke development scheme.
Masters Coach Jim Cannon, coaches a large squad
of masters swimmers which includes GB, European and world
record holders.
In addition there is a large number of qualified and
non-qualified enthusiastic helpers.
Despite being a competitive club it has a very friendly
and fun atmosphere.
Throughout the year a number of social events are organised
including a Christmas pool party, family barbecue and
various non-swimming based trips.
